Albion Vertalingen VOF was founded on 14 August 1986 in Dordrecht by Kees Zoeter and Peter de Vlaam, two friends with a passion for English. Both studied English Language and Literature at the University of Leiden and received their Master’s degrees in 1986 and 1987, respectively. After five years they parted company when Kees accepted a position as a legal staffer at the Alien Affairs Directorate of the Ministry of Justice. Albion then continued under Peter’s leadership.
  

In 2000 the American Betsy van der Hoek-Springer, PhD joined the agency as a part-time translator. She studied English at Appalachian State University in North Carolina and the University of Nottingham (UK), acquiring a thoroughgoing knowledge of American and British English.  

Peter has worked at Albion since its inception as a full-time English-Dutch and Dutch-English translator. He has experience with translation in many areas. Where necessary, assistance and advice are solicited from qualified independent colleagues and advisors in the professional field—and naturally from the customer or writer of the text to be translated, who is more often than not the best source of information. For French and German and—depending on the subject area—some other languages, a close and firm relationship with expert colleagues has provided a reliable basis for the quality and breadth of our services for many years. 

In November 1999, during the National Translator’s Congress of the Nederlandse Vereniging van Tolken en Vertalers, the present-day NGTV, Peter de Vlaam was voted ‘favourite translator’ by colleagues and customers. 12 years later, in November 2011, a similar congress was organized jointly by Teamwork, Vereniging Zelfstandige Vertalers and ITV Hogeschool voor Tolken en Vertalen. Peter was elected 'Best Translator 2011' .
